My Bio,
After a long journey, I now live in Charlotte, NorthCarolina. I am an Artist thrown into a wonderful field ofcreativity and expression.
It all started in a small town in Highland, Illinois. That iswhere I learned the value of hard work, my views through a Godfearing family, and was the oldest of six kids. When I was 18yrsold, I needed to get away from the Corn Fields and decided to jointhe Army. At the time, the world was at peace and it was a greatway to earn college money and excitement! The Army Airborne Rangerssounded a little crazy, so that was all me. I would have to saythat Ranger School was one of the hardest challenges I have evercome across. We got like 45min to 3 hours of sleep a night andanywhere from 1-2 meals per day. Sometimes they would feed us at10pm and then again at 1am so we would go 21 hours with no food. For me, Ranger School lasted about 5 months because I kept gettinginjured and recycled. I graduated against an 87 percent dropoutrate, so it was quite an honor. So then what happened? The WorldTrade Centers went down and my entire life changed. The entireworld changed and was aiming to chase Radical Islam out of theirholes. A month later, I found myself in the Mountains ofAfghanistan fighting along side other special operation units. Itwas in the battle of Roberts ridge that I lost my friends andbrothers, Marc Anderson, Bradley Crose, and Mathew Commons. Warbecame real and the pain grew strong. For the first time in mylife, I saw elite men together with tears in their eyes revengefulfrom the loss. This was just the start, Iraq was right around thecorner. Sitting in 125 degree weather with a chance of sand stormswas not enjoyable. We waited in Kuwait for about a month before theWar kicked off doing training missions and hoping Saddam would nothit us with Chemical Scud Missiles. It was scary going into Iraqwith a charcoal lined uniform on in case we got hit by chemicals. Iwas in a long range surveillance unit doing recons behind enemylines as the forward line of friendly troops advanced north. Ispent about two years in Iraq doing all kinds of missions likepatrols and teaching the Kurds. We lost three men in Iraq butcompared to other units, suffered less loss.
War is not a good event and should always be last resort. IfI have children, I will raise them to spread peace in every levelof their lives. I now seek a happy peaceful life and have foundthat my God given talent in Art is a great way to express what Ihave been through! To create good Art, you have to express greatemotion. If a painting pulls at your emotions, it is usuallydesired. To create this as an artist, I believe you have to expressgreat emotion into your work. My experience has helped me producesome very powerful work, and to express myself in a healthy way. Ihave been painting since I was very young and have Artists withstudios on both sides of my family. My work is filled with love, passion, and pain. It's a marbled smear of form and passion. Take achaos of color and make sense out of it using dept, balance, and anice flair. The emotion brings it together to form a beautifulstatement. I am self and family taught emerging with my own uniquestyles and techniques. I choose to paint on Birch wood with mixedmedias. Other than that, I am just a simple man enjoying the littlethings in life, the things that really matter. As I get older Ifind myself spending more time acknowledging sunsets, flowers, andthe beautiful elements throughout the great outdoors.
I love to travel and just spent three months in Barcelona,Spain painting and learning from Spanish artists. To be put into anew culture/country and do odd end jobs and paintings has been agreat experience for me. I believe part of this mission is tohumble myself. In one day, I quit my Designer position at DrexelHeritage, got rid of my new truck, ended my gym membership, andturned my phone off. With a one way ticket to Barcelona, I leftwith a sense of freedom and less burden. For years I was worriedabout social norms and chasing money. I gave up and lot to gaineven more, an understanding of the simple things in life andperusing what God has blessed me with. I earned a lot of respectfor the way Europeans live their lives. From what I haveexperienced, Europeans do not consume as much and strive to livelogically, within their own means. The majority did not seem to berunning the rat race of hurry up and succeed. Time is spent withfamily and friends. For the next few years I plan on going to a newcountry every 4 months to paint with their local artists. Mybrother watches my condo while I am gone, which is a big a help. Iam living basic and for the first time in my life, I feel I amactually living my life. I do believe that everyone has dreams, butmost are dreamers. If you have the courage to take the risk, tostep over the line.......The WORLD will accommodate to your desiresand persistence earned from a little sacrifice. For me, its to seethe world and the wonderful Art, Architecture, and History thateach country presents! Its to use the knowledge to express lifeoutside the box with a brush stroke. True wisdom and knowledgecomes from being worldly......Leaving your land to learn of others! You can read books about it your entire life, but someone that doesthis for just six months will have much more to teach andshare........
Many Designers and friends of mine in Charlotte have beenasking and asking, when will you have your first art Show?September 6^th^-7^th^ I will be having my first art show atDilworth Coffee in the Quail Corners Shopping Center off park rd.It's the weekend after labor day, Saturday and Sunday from12:00pm-6:00pm. I am very excited to show Charlotte my passion andfor the city to have a glimpse through the Modern eyes of GregWalker Jr. All of Charlotte is welcome to Modern Vision. Duringthis event, I will also be presenting a photograph of a heart thatwas carved into a tree years ago. I found this in the woods about aweek ago. In the center of the heart is a natural image of Maryholding Jesus with three wise men bowing to them. I revisited thesite to make sure it was not man made. It is all natural watermarks, mold, and bark. It is an amazing image, and a must see. Ican be a skeptic when it comes to images like this, but thephotograph speaks for itself.
Thanks, Greg Walker Jr.
