A new study shows that patients who receive a
heart transplant have a lower rejection risk and higher survival rate if the organ comes from a donor of the same sex. Additional studies have hinted that gender may play a key role in other types of
organ transplants.
Fast Facts:
- Scientists analyzed data from over 18,000 organ transplants for this study.
- Currently it is not clear why a gender match is important to transplant survival, although heart size may play a role.
- This study was presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions.
