Half of
heart attacks and
strokes happen in people who appear to be in good health and have normal
cholesterol levels. These people have been found to have an elevated level of a certain
protein which has been linked to
heart disease. This substance is known as
C-reactive protein, or CRP. A new study reveals that taking a daily dose of
statins may prevent the development of
cardiovascular diseases, and life-threatening heart attacks and strokes, associated with CRP.
Fast Facts:
- Researchers from 26 different countries tested Crestor in 8,901 patients, the other 8,901 received a placebo.
- A daily dose of Crestor reduced the risk of stroke and heart attack by 50%.
- This study appears in The New England Journal of Medicine.
