The Great American Smokeout is an annual event held on the third Thursday of November. The
American Cancer Society wants smokers to see what it would take to
quit smoking and to try it for one day.
Fast Facts:
- The first Smokeout was held on Nov. 18, 1976 and nearly 1 million smokers quit for the day.
- This event helps make smokers aware of the tools that are available to help them quit.
- Tools that aid smoking cessation include: prescription medication (Chantix or Zyban), support groups, counseling, and nicotine replacement products (patches or gum).
